Thunderstorms over East Kent there may have been but the sun shone for the arrival of Miss Minster, her Court and her guests at the summer show in the ancient capital of Thanet.
Minster W.I arrived as a flotilla of little ships, Derek Crow-Brown compered the mustering of the floats. A giant entertained small children, Thanet Lions were ever present doing good work and Thanet Scouts were everywhere with the Minster troop once again manning the burger stall. | And in the background was the Flower Show committee without which this extravaganza would not have happened.
Thanks to them all and to those hundreds who refused to be intimidated by storm clouds and made the whole event worthwhile. | Thunderstorms over East Kent there may have been but the sun shone for the arrival of Miss Minster, her Court and her guests at the summer show in the ancient capital of Thanet.

An excellent medieval festival of music, armoury, lifestyles and of course mead and ales in Sandwich this weekend.
The rain kept off on Saturday and better weather is forecast for Sunday - so still time to enjoy the show. Good to catch up with the Town Mayor of Sandwich, Emmet Csuka, the recently retired Speaker of the Cinque ports, Cllr Paul Carter in full medieval rig and Mine host at the Blushing Maiden Inn and one of the driving forces behind the event, Harry Sampson. | An excellent medieval festival of music, armoury, lifestyles and of course mead and ales in Sandwich this weekend.

The Innovation Kitchen, launched today at the East Kent Colleges’ Yarrow Hotel is a truly amazing facility. Small entrepreneurial businesses can hire the kitchen to use top-of-the range equipment to make for marketing products hitherto created in domestic kitchens.
And Daphne (pictured), who herself runs a small culinary business is on hand to offer encouragement and advice. The Innovation Kitchen has been described by one freshly enrolled user as ‘a game changer for our region’ - Get cooking! | Congratulations and best wishes to the new Town Mayor of Sandwich The Rt. Worshipful Cllr Emmet Csuka and to the new Lady Mayoress and his wife, Elaine. They took the oaths of office at the Guildhall in Sandwich yesterday evening.
Thanks also to the retiring Mayor, Cllr. Paul Carter for his two years of service in the post and for his sterling work and the Speaker of the Cinque Ports. A job very well done. | A good attendance for the popular Elmstone Summer Fayre. Pictured are Cllr Trevor Bartlett (Dover) at the plant stall, Sue Chandler with the Chairman of the Parish Council, Suzy Gale and friends and huge thanks to those who toiled over burgers, hot dogs, cold drinks, cream teas and the world’s finest pie stall.

The hoisting of the VE Day ensign at Birchington with Flagmaster Captain John Lewis MN, the reading of the Churchill’s address following the German surrender by Lieutenant Colonel Cllr Max Houghton in the presence of the Royal British Legion and Birchington Standards and a gathering of service veterans including Derek Crow Brown. | On this day 80 years ago Sir Winston Churchill said “This is your victory, victory of the cause of freedom in every land. In all our long history we have never seen a greater day than this.”
I, along with my constituents across Herne Bay, Sandwich and West Thanet give our thanks to those tens of thousands of men and women who fought for freedom. Their courage in the face of unimaginable hardship must never be forgotten. | Mr Speaker Hoyle launches the page-turning ceremony with his chaplain, Canon Mark Birch, in the Book of Remembrance in the House of Commons. The Last Post and Reveille were sounded by a bugler from the Scots Guards.
This week we remember Major Lord Apsley, Colonel James Baldwin Webb, Captain Robert Hamilton Bernard, Commander Rupert Arnold Brabner RN, John Dermot Campbell MP and Major John Hamilton Cartland . The page will now be turned on every sitting Wednesday. |

More recently on European soil, many thousands of brave Ukrainians have been sacrificed defending their country and their freedom. Mr Trump needs to be reminded that ‘peace at any price’ will never last and that Britain, France and Germany will surely not recognise a surrender to Putin enforced by the United States . | A useful but sobering meeting with Mo Razzaq, President of the Federation of Independent Retailers in the House this week. Retail crime, sometimes violent, remains an issue but the effects of the increase in National Insurance charges, energy prices and business rates as well as the above inflation increase in the minimum wage all arise from the policies of the present Government and pose a real threat to many of the smaller High Street businesses upon which we still depend. | A pleasure to host Lions Clubs International’s Lions Day with the United Nations this week and to welcome so many visitors from Overseas including Past International President Lion Douglas X Alexander who presented young Reuben with his winning peace poster award.
Also great support from the founder of Birmingham for Ukraine, Simone Sherman |

Kemi Badenoch, the Leader of the Opposition, has appointed a very strong Shadow Ministerial Team, headed by her Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Mel Stride, that is well qualified to hold Starmer's already failing administration to account.
For those of us looking for a strong leader this is a hugely impressive team drawn from across the Conservative spectrum that is very encouraging.
It will be a long road back to government but this is a significant step in the right direction. | Thanks to the Invicta Concert Band, to the dancers, to Lloyd Ellery, to the Lone Piper, to the intrepid last-minute Master of Ceremonies, to the Padre Kenneth Cox who conducted Act of Service and to Chairman Russell Haffenden and the Ramsgate Branch of the Royal British Legion for another splendid Kent Festival of Remembrance at the Granville theatre.

It’s not all work and no play! The performance by the band of the Scots Guards in Speakers Court was superb and the lone piper, high up on the
ramparts opposite the Clocktower - too far up to photograph - was stunning. A renegade reprobate possibly, politically difficult and troublesome but never dull with a wicked wit and an outsized sense of humour. He was a member of the UK delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe that I was privileged to lead and I regarded him as a friend who was amusing and in the interests of the United Kingdom , during our debates, always supportive. Rest in peace, auld rogue. |

Today marks 40 years in Parliament.
Of the 'Class of 83' only two Conservatives survive following forty years of continuous service in their original seats - Sir Edward Leigh (Gainsborough) and Sir Roger Gale (North Thanet).
Three other Members, Sir David Evennett (Bexleyheath and Crayford), Sir Greg Knight (East Yorkshire) and Sir Christopher Chope (Christchurch) left the House and were subsequently re-elected in their current seats. | I have heard Penny Mordaunt MP speak on many occasions and consider her address to North Thanet Conservative Association to have been one of her finest and quite exceptional in its stimulation, determination and moving personal testimony.
Penny is a remarkably talented politician with a passionate commitment to her King, her Country and her Party and we were fortunate to be able to attract her to Thanet so soon after the coronation in which she played such an important role. | I have heard Penny Mordaunt MP speak on many occasions and consider her address to North Thanet Conservative Association to have been one of her finest and quite exceptional in its stimulation, determination and moving personal testimony.

A great success that will have generated happy memories of a piece of our nation's history. | Thank you to all of those in Birchington- Birchington Parish Council, local Thanet District Councillors, Thanet Lions, The Royal British Legion, businesses and individuals who have donated raffle prizes and others- who have contributed to create a truly special and worthy Coronation weekend enjoyed by so many local people and visitors of all ages. RIP Barry Humphries
One of the kindest, funniest, most talented men that I have had the privilege to work with. Enter Elysian fields of gladioli trailing clouds of glory. | Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, when we remember all those murdered during the Holocaust, Nazi persecution of other groups, and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

#HolocaustMemorialDay #HMD2023 #LightTheDarkness | Our first ‘Save Manston Airport’ AGM since the announcement that the Judicial Review has been thrown out by the judge.
The packed out hall showed just how much passion and drive there still is to see planes take off once again from Manston.
Thank you to everyone that has kept the belief and continued the fight.
We will get there. |
