Margate`s “Portas Pilot” success – Gale welcomes success

May 26th 2012

Margate`s MP, Sir Roger Gale, has this morning welcomed the official announcement of Margate`s successful bid for “Portas Pilot” funding for the regeneration of the High Street.

“The success of this bid owes a very great deal to the hard work put in by Robin Vaughan Lyons who the Minister, Grant Shapps,  has congratulated, rightly, for his sense of leadership, energy and enthusiasm and vision.  The concept of “education and enjoyment” found clear favour with the Minister when I took the project to him some months ago and I was delighted to receive a call from Grant Shapps yesterday, informing me of our award.

The Turner Contemporary has already had a considerable regenerative effect upon the Old Town of Margate and the High Street is now ripe for further improvement.  The “Portas Pilot” money will help considerably with this process but it is not an end in itself: we now have to strive very hard to realise Robin`s ambitions for the area and I look forward to working with him and his team to bring the plans to fruition and to completing another piece of the jigsaw that is the revival of Margate as a key seaside destination for leisure.”
