North Thanet's MP Roger Gale and South Thanet's Tory Laura Sandys have today (Thursday 5th June) congratulated Thanet District Council on the spectacular achievement in the Environment Agency's Blue Flag Award scheme for beaches.

With 1/8th of all Blue Flag beaches in the Country Thanet has the best performance of any area for a decade.

"This is tremendous news for our tourist offer" says Roger Gale.  "All our existing Blue Flag Beaches have retained their status and with the addition of one new award (Joss Bay) and two re-entries (Walpole Bay and Ramsgate Main Sands) we now have 10 Blue Flag beaches to be proud of.

All of this is reflected beautifully in TDC`s "Our Beaches are Beautiful" brochure which I hope will receive wide publicity".

And Laura Sandys adds:

"I am delighted that Joss Bay is in the list for the first time and that Ramsgate Main Sands has regained it's rightful place as another premier bathing beach.

With more people likely to holiday in the UK as the pound weakens against the euro it's good that we have something to shout about."

Gale and Sandys are both committed to the improvement in rail transport and visitor facilities and accommodation that Thanet needs to develop to bring in visitors throughout an extended season.

"Our beaches are a key asset" they say "and a very good starting point for those considering the kind of inward investment that we need to create real new jobs in the tourist industry."
