October 16th 2013

Jake George of Minster, a sixteen year old East Kent College student has just (Wednesday afternoon) been presented with the Youthbuild Uk (14-16 category) Young Builder of the Year Award given out  at the House of Commons. (pictures will follow from Youthbuild UK  or are available through the College). He wins a trophy, a building tools token and a prize for a “personal treat”.

Jake, who was accompanied by his parents, has taken qualifications in bricklaying at the College, continuing with a 1-day a week release while serving a two-year apprenticeship with a local builder. He said  “ I really didn`t realise that I had won. When they handed out the first certificates I thought that that was it and then there was only me left!”

Commenting on Jake`s achievement his MP, Sir Roger Gale, who was at the Terrace reception  to see the award presented, said:

“This is a huge recognition of Jake`s growing ability. He had not had an easy early life but East Kent College gave him the break that he needed and now the only way is up.  It is a huge credit to his tutor, Joe Furness (who also received a training award), to the College and, of course, to one very proud young man that he has beaten off nationwide competition to win the title of Young Builder of the Year.”
