Rail fare Increases - Highway Robbery - MP

November 29th 2007

North Thanet’s MP, Roger Gale, has today described as "highway robbery" Southeastern Trains proposed fare increases faced by travellers from Thanet and Herne Bay.

"These are above-inflation costs of a kind that would have made Dick Turpin blush" says Roger Gale. "We are looking at a deteriorating service, dilapidation within our stations, wasted resources, journey times that take longer than the best times achieved in the 1920s and ever-rising prices.

This is precisely the wrong way to entice passengers out of cars and onto public transport and is, quite simply, unacceptable.  It is one of a growing number of concerns that I shall raise with Southeastern trains Charles Horton when I meet with him next week
