I shall be raising the needs of this cause privately with the Secretary of State. |  22nd October 2025As a life member of the League Against Cruel Sports it was good to meet the League’s new chairman, David Fielding, at the House of Commons this week and to discuss possible amendments to the Hunting Act to end the practice of the ‘trail hunting’ that is used by the unscrupulous to circumvent the law. |  15th October 2025I have been screened for prostate cancer but far too many men ‘of a certain age’ (45-70) have not. If you are one of them get it done. No point in falling victim to a condition that, if treated early enough, is avoidable. |

Just ask: “Could it be sepsis?” |  3rd September 2025Six year old Hugh died after a 19-month fight with cancer in 2021. Unlike neonatal care there is still no statutory right to leave or pay when a child is diagnosed. Hugh’s Law is about recognising that when a child becomes seriously ill their parents need urgent support not red tape and bureaucracy. A Private Member’s bill had support but fell with the general election under the last government. Either a government amendment or a fresh private member’s bill is needed to address this issue now |  27th July 2025Thanks to the generosity of the people of Birchington and a dedicated team of volunteers the Cancer Research shop in the village has this year donated in excess of £50,000 towards the work of this wonderful charity. A small community with a huge heart. |
 18th July 2025In the UK there are some 153,000 people living with Parkinson’s disease. When I was a young man it was ‘rare’ - possibly because of inaccurate diagnosis. Now, partly because we are living longer, many families - my own included - have direct or indirect contact with this condition. Do we have full complement of Parkinson’s nurses to meet local needs? Almost certainly not. And yet I cannot recall the last or the current Secretary of State for Health mentioning this. As we recall VE Day we also need to remember that there is still a conflict on European soil and that men, women and children are dying in Ukraine every day. |

The campaign is backed by Swim England and The Royal College of Nursing. “Regular swimming improves cardiovascular fitness and weight management and reduces the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, dementia and Type 2 diabetes as well as enhancing mental wellbeing“ says the brief. There is no ‘quick fix’ to this problem but a better understanding and better training for all of those - including MPs - who have to become involved in such cases would go a long way to help. That is why I am supporting this Women’s Aid cause. |

 24th October 2024Every year about 7500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and of those women one in seven, tragically and avoidably, die within two months of diagnosis. That is a truly shocking statistic. We need a diagnostic and treatment pathway that is equal to that applied to breast cancer in order to radically reduce the figure. That means greater personal awareness of symptoms, support and training for GPs and a national ovarian cancer plan to eliminate the ‘postcode lottery’ that currently exists. |  22nd October 2024With television sports presenter and animal welfare campaigner Kirsty Gallacher to support the Animals Matter coalition in promoting its animal welfare ‘manifesto’ at Westminster. The document, backed by The Humane Society International (UK), the RSPCA, Compassion in World Farming and Four Paws, highlights the use of cages and crates, animal welfare labelling of food, intensive animal agriculture, |  22nd October 2024the licensing of animal rescue centres, illegal puppy imports, animal welfare standards in trade deals, the importing of hunting ‘trophies’ and the worldwide trade in fur. ‘We have made great progress in the last decade’ says Sir Roger, himself a lifelong animal welfarist, ‘ but the new Government must maintain the momentum. As the document shows there is a long agenda of issues that still have to be addressed and we have to make sure that these issues are not sidelined’. |

This means that all of the money raised goes to support animal welfare. An event like that Hosted by Horace this weekend - our first since the pandemic- can generate the equivalent of a year’s income for one of the rescue centres that we help to support in the developing world.
