Press Releases From May 2020

Roger regularly issues press releases about current topics. We have included a selection of them here which we hope will be of interest to you. For previous articles from the year, please click here.

December 28th 2020

I have sent the following to the Prime Ministers PPS-

Teachers, school staff and parents need a clear and definitive statement that schools will not be required to reopen in January until effective vaccination is made available to teaching staff.

Education is important but so are the lives and wellbeing of teachers and key working parents need time to plan for the care of their children.

The House is sitting on Wednesday. May we have a statement?

December 24th 2020

A great sense of relief rather than triumph. Common sense and common interest seem to have prevailed and we are now back where many of us wanted to be in 1973 - in a Common Market and not a United States of Europe.

December 24th 2020

Coming into 2020 none of us knew what we would face in a year.

I did not expect that from March I would have worked in isolation for 9 months. Receiving over 25,000 emails, trying our best to ensure that people got the help that they needed.

Thank you to all of those for your work through the last year.

Wishing you all a very happy, peaceful and healthy Christmas

The Carlton Cinema, Westgate on Sea, and the Kavanagh Cinema, Herne Bay, will be the recipients of significant grant aid announced by the Government (DCMS). (Sunday 20th December)

“The Entertainment Industry has been incredibly hard-hit by the pandemic” Says North Thanet`s MP, Sir Roger Gale “so this is good news. We need these businesses to stay afloat. However, I would still like the Treasury to come up with support for live performers as well as for those appearing on the silver screen.”.

December 19th 2020

It is very hard but if we are to enjoy Christmas and at the same time stay safe it is vital that everyone sticks to the restrictions that have been announced this afternoon. The alternative will be a truly dangerous and terrible start to 2021.

Radio Kent

December 16th 2020

On Radio Kent this morning, I was asked, Ministers have ditched a controversial housing target formula proposed for England? Are you surprised in the shift of government policies? Is it a good thing?

What I said to Robert Jenrick is, legislate and make developers, use all of the Brownfields Sites that are available first, before you touch a blade of green grass, use all the consents that have already been granted before you touch a blade of green grass. If you do all of that, then much of our housing need will be met before we even have to look at using agricultural land.

Agricultural Bill

October 6th 2020

Many constituents have contacted me regarding the Agricultural Bill. It is because I believe that we have to protect, in the interests of both livestock and British farming, our farm animal welfare standards that I voted for New Clause 4 when the bill was before the Commons. This was, of course defeated.

I shall now study the Lords` amendments with care to see whether Lord Curry`s proposal – or possibly another – meets the requirements that will fulfil the promise that “when we leave the European Union we shall no longer have to admit into the United Kingdom produce generated under conditions that we would not permit in Britain”. If so, I shall support that amendment.

October 6th 2020

Yesterday I asked the Minister of State (Minister for Housing), The Rt Hon Chris Pincher, What steps he is taking to ensure that high-quality agricultural land is not used for housing developments?

Here was his answer and also my supplementary question:

September 28th 2020

Today in Parliament I (virtually) asked the Home Secretary, The Rt Hon Priti Patel -

All the children and women and men who seek to cross the channel are themselves, the victims of criminal activity. So further to her answer can my Right Honourable Friend tell the House, how many of the perpetrators of these vile crimes either in France or in the United Kingdom have been arrested and sentenced?

And can she also tell the House what discussions she's had with her German counterparts to prevent the provision of the outboard motors and inflatable dinghies that I understand emanate from Germany and are used in these crossings?

EU- Animal Welfare

June 19th 2020

A disappointing answer to my question: we were told throughout the Referendum campaign that one of the big advantages of leaving the EU would be that we would be able to prevent our farmers, who have invested in high animal welfare standards, from being undercut by cheaply produced less welfare-friendly imports. It now seems as though other countries are to be allowed to shelter under the “we don`t tell other countries what to do” umbrella. No, we do not. But we can and should prevent them – if necessary through very high tariffs – from dumping factory-farmed animal products on our market.
