Agricultural Bill

October 6th 2020

Many constituents have contacted me regarding the Agricultural Bill. It is because I believe that we have to protect, in the interests of both livestock and British farming, our farm animal welfare standards that I voted for New Clause 4 when the bill was before the Commons. This was, of course defeated.

I shall now study the Lords` amendments with care to see whether Lord Curry`s proposal – or possibly another – meets the requirements that will fulfil the promise that “when we leave the European Union we shall no longer have to admit into the United Kingdom produce generated under conditions that we would not permit in Britain”. If so, I shall support that amendment.

October 6th 2020

Yesterday I asked the Minister of State (Minister for Housing), The Rt Hon Chris Pincher, What steps he is taking to ensure that high-quality agricultural land is not used for housing developments?

Here was his answer and also my supplementary question:

UQ- Priti Patel, Home Secretary

September 28th 2020

Today in Parliament I (virtually) asked the Home Secretary, The Rt Hon Priti Patel -

All the children and women and men who seek to cross the channel are themselves, the victims of criminal activity. So further to her answer can my Right Honourable Friend tell the House, how many of the perpetrators of these vile crimes either in France or in the United Kingdom have been arrested and sentenced?

And can she also tell the House what discussions she's had with her German counterparts to prevent the provision of the outboard motors and inflatable dinghies that I understand emanate from Germany and are used in these crossings?

Internal Market Bill

September 10th 2020

The breaking of international law is not something that can be done on a ‘limited basis’ you either break the law or you do not. Voting against this measure is a matter of principle not just for myself or this government, but for this Country.

Internal Market Bill

September 9th 2020

From a swift reading of the Internal Market Bill, it appears Ministers will be taking powers to make up the rules and the law almost at whim. The much-lauded “oven-ready deal” now appears to have been at best half-baked when it was signed with a flourish as a great achievement by the Prime Minister. I fear that while

Over the last couple of days we have seen our beaches full of people enjoying our beautiful seafronts. To those that have been abiding by the social distancing rules, thank you. But those that have been using our beaches simply to cause havoc, have ignored the social distancing measures, and left litter over our foreshore, will be responsible if our beaches have to be closed so that nobody at all can used them. We all have to play our part in ensuring that we keep to the government guidelines.

June 20th 2020

Welcome news from County Hall about this year`s Kent Test and School application process. Families seeking selective education for their children need to register them for consideration by the deadline of July 1st - so act immediately if you have not already done so.

EU- Animal Welfare

June 19th 2020

A disappointing answer to my question: we were told throughout the Referendum campaign that one of the big advantages of leaving the EU would be that we would be able to prevent our farmers, who have invested in high animal welfare standards, from being undercut by cheaply produced less welfare-friendly imports. It now seems as though other countries are to be allowed to shelter under the “we don`t tell other countries what to do” umbrella. No, we do not. But we can and should prevent them – if necessary through very high tariffs – from dumping factory-farmed animal products on our market.

Food Standards

June 6th 2020

One of the advantages of leaving the EU, we were told, was that we would be able to enforce our own high animal welfare standards and protect our farmers without having to allow, under EU regulations, the importing of products generated under conditions not permitted in the United Kingdom.

An update from the 6th week in isolation (this was recorded on 1st May).

I still have items on the agenda. I am still seeking more assistance for small businesses.

I'm still pressing the case for better protection for our doctors and nurses, hospital staff, care staff in nursing homes and others who are putting themselves in harm's way to look after us. It is absolutely vital that we find the consistent flow of equipment that will enable the men and women doing that job for us to feel comfortable literally and safe.

Remember, keep safe everyone.
