Covid 19: UPDATE: GOVERNMENT FURLOUGH SCHEME
April 15th 2020
Today, I'm delighted to see the Government announced that the furlough scheme start date is to be extended to the 19th March. This change will allow thousands more employees to access the scheme.
Until today, the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme only applied to employees on a payroll before the 28th February, but there were concerns this left behind people who had recently changed jobs. I have spoken to numerous Ministers and officials at the Treasury about this to raise the concerns of residents affected, and am very pleased to see the scheme extended.
Under the scheme announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak last month, employers can:
Claim a grant covering 80% of the wages for a furloughed employee, subject to a cap of £2,500 a month
Claim for furloughed employees that were employed and on their PAYE payroll on or before 19 March 2020. This means that the employee must have been notified to HMRC through an RTI submission notifying payment in respect of that employee on or before 19th March 2020
This change makes the scheme more generous while keeping the substantial fraud risks under control and is expected to benefit over 200,000 employees.
